THIEVES is an acronym that helps people to improve reading comprehension in non-fiction work. This method enables readers to figure out which information is more important than the others and which information they need the most in the text. It makes you improve your attention in the process of learning.It is suitable for everyone from students to teachers. Everyone can use this strategy for their own studies without any trouble.
It stands for:
- Title
- Headings
- Introduction
- Every first sentence in a paragraph
- Visuals & Vocabulary
- End-of-chapter questions
- Summary
Title
Before you start to reading, look at the title.Try to predict what the content could be.And take notes about what you already know about this topic.
Headings
In this step, find the headings in the text and convert them into questions.
Introduction
When you read the introduction part,ask yourself “What does the introduction tell about the text”? and what do you know about it?
Every first sentence in a paragraph
Read every first sentence in the paragraph.Acording to these sentences think about what the man theme could be.You will gradually start to understand the topic.
Visuals & Vocabulary
Scan the text and if there are any pictures,maps,graphics,captiond,bolded words etc., put some effort to understand what you can learn from them.
End-of-chapter Questions
Read the questions at the end of the text and figure out what they emphasize on, what you could learn from these questions and focus on.Because, ithese questions are likely to ne related to the main theme
Summary
